Hand glider mishap forces parachute deployment

 The guy's description:

I was towing and I'd attached the link to the tow line incorrectly. It couldn't release. At 1,000' I realized I was in trouble, couldn't fix it, was descending at 3000' per minute, and tossed my parachute. 11 seconds after my parachute was full, I was on the ground. More excitement than I need, I can assure you.

1:09 I release my auto-release. That allows me to get somewhat higher without it disconnecting the tow.

you can see me try to release the tow, and nothing happens, even after several tries.

1:30 in, I know I'm in trouble. I kicked my feet out of the harness to indicate that I had a problem. (But they already knew that.)

1:40, you can see the tow line, nearly straight down, over the base tube, starting to put pressure to dive.

1:50, I start fishing, with one hand, for my parachute. That didn't work.

2:00, I begin to use both hands, and at 2:10, the parachute is finally out. The video shows that 'chute waving around, but it's still. The glider and I are doing the waving. That's obvious if you see the shadows on the glider wing.

2:19, you can see the glider shudder. That's the tow line being cut on the hose clamp that holds the wheel in place.

2:23 I'm on the ground.

If you look at the angle of the glider with the horizon, at around 1:40 and compare that with the angle at 1:54, you can see that I'm headed nearly straight down. On the ground, thinking, "Hey, I'm down, alive, and I don't hurt. Amazing."

At the top of my flight, I was dragging about a mile of tow line behind me. Harold had released the power to both winch drums, and watched the line scream off both drums at a rate he'd never seen, or heard, before. He was pretty much terrified. "I'm really sorry Harold."

Asiana Airlines - An Open Letter to Airline Passengers

An Open Letter to Airline Passengers:

Many of you ignore us. And by us, I mean your flight crew – you know, those pesky, perky folks in polyester that pour Cokes. Flight Attendants, contrary to popular belief, are highly skilled and it’s not in the art of delivering beverages and snacks. Instead, we’re safety professionals initially taught for weeks, some of us a couple months, on delivering babies, putting out fires, administering first aid and, of course, evacuating an aircraft… which means getting you off and to safety along with perhaps hundreds more in ninety seconds or less. We are required by the FAA to maintain these skills through annual recurrent training.

In an incredible show of just how capable Flight Attendants are at their job, our colleagues at Asiana Airlines evacuated a full Boeing 777 before it was engulfed in flames after crash-landing in San Francisco. Kudos to them for sure… Among our industry, we hold them in awe, partly because we are thankful it wasn’t us on that plane. We can do it and perhaps must one day, but no one wants to be faced with the danger, with death.

But, you, Passenger, have to make a phone call. Send that text. Play with your iProduct. Ignore the safety demonstration. Do you recall where your exit was? The plane is on fire; the door near you is blocked. The overhead bin is now in your lap. Smoke has filled the cabin and you cannot see. Wires and oxygen masks hang in your face. Who are you gonna look for now?

Oh, it’s the Flight Attendant! The one who said hello to you during boarding but to whom you could not utter a word because you were too busy to notice.

We appreciate your flying; we genuinely do. We enjoy hearing about your world, where you’re heading for business or vacation. Without your business, we wouldn’t feed ourselves much less our families. We couldn’t pay our car payments or afford to educate ourselves higher than the degrees many already possess. We also wouldn’t jet off to exotic locales courtesy of the company we work for and enjoy a lifestyle unlike any other. We really do enjoy serving you.

What we don’t enjoy is being taken for granted. We are trained to react for both anticipated and unanticipated emergencies. The Asiana crew had no clue what was about to befall them. This would be an unanticipated emergency. After an almost eleven hour flight, the crew likely had discussed what they’d enjoy on their layover in San Francisco, one of my favorites. Without a doubt, though, the crew – like all of us – silently/mentally prepare for just what happened. Who would have thought that the landing gear would be sheared off by the sea wall and the tail of the aircraft ripped apart? Thank God the plane didn’t catapult down the runway…

When we sit on that jump seat for takeoff and landing, we are recalling our training. Where is my emergency equipment? What are my evacuation commands? If we land in the water, which exits are usable? What should I take with me to use until first responders arrive? The Asiana crew was en pointe.

And that is where we need you to be, Mister and Mrs. Important Passenger. We need you to turn off your damned electronics and listen to us. Debate the specifics of whether it interferes with aircraft navigation guides with someone else. We need you to hear us and not just for your sake. While you’re being caught up to speed on the very important details other passengers are comprehending, you’re cutting into the ninety seconds we’re trained to get you off the aircraft, namely because that’s approximately the time it takes for it to become engulfed in flames. It’s not just you we’re tasked with saving… it’s everyone on board, and then ourselves.

 

You can thank us later… after you say hello. And, leave your damned belongings behind like we told you. No one needs luggage during an evacuation. And, if you puncture the slide on one of our only usable exits, we’re not going to be as happy as we were when we were pouring you that Diet Coke.

Think it cannot happen to you: You can’t ask those two teens that died but ask the hundreds who walked away.

Διάσωση Αγνοούμενου από Super Puma της ΠΑ

Την Κυριακή 7 Ιουλίου 2013 και ώρα 11:09, ελικόπτερο Super Puma της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας (ΠΑ), απογειώθηκε από την 112 Πτέρυγα Μάχης/Αεροπορική Βάση Ελευσίνας, με σκοπό τον εντοπισμό ακυβέρνητου ιστιοφόρου καθώς και τη διάσωση αγνοούμενου, ο οποίος επέβαινε σε φουσκωτή λέμβο και αγνοούνταν στη θαλάσσια περιοχή μεταξύ των Νήσων Κέας και Κύθνου.

Το ελικόπτερο της ΠΑ εντόπισε το ακυβέρνητο ιστιοφόρο και στη συνέχεια, δεύτερο ελικόπτερο Super Puma της ΠΑ απογειώθηκε από την 112 ΠΜ στις 13:11, εντόπισε τη φουσκωτή λέμβο, περισυνέλεξε σώο τον αγνοούμενο στις 14:31, περίπου 10 ναυτικά μίλια δυτικά της Νήσου Κύθνου και τον μετέφερε με ασφάλεια στην 112 ΠΜ.

Ο ΣΚΛΗΡΟΤΕΡΟΣ ΑΓΩΝΑΣ ΠΕΡΙΠΕΤΕΙΑΣ ΣΤΟΝ ΚΟΣΜΟ ΞΕΚΙΝΗΣΕ!

Από τη Βενεζουέλα ως την Ιαπωνία και από τη Νότια Αφρική ως το Νεπάλ, οι καλύτεροι αθλητές αντοχής και (αλεξιπτώτου πλαγιάς) paragliding στον κόσμο, είναι έτοιμοι να αντιμετωπίσουν την πιο δύσκολη πρόκληση της ζωής τους.
  Κάνοντας πεζοπορία κατά μήκος των ηπείρων και πετώντας πάνω από εχθρικά βουνά, οι ήρωες αυτοί θα διαγωνιστούν στον σκληρότερο αγώνα περιπέτειας στον κόσμο, το RedBullX-Alps. Η στιγμή της αλήθειας είναι πολύ κοντά, καθώς ετοιμάζονται για την έκτη διεξαγωγή του δημοφιλούς αγώνα. Συγκεκριμένα, στις 7 Ιουλίου, 32 αθλητές από 21 χώρες θα ξεκινήσουν από το Σάλτσμπουργκ για το μεγαλύτερο στοίχημα της ζωής τους. Από εκεί θα αρχίσει ένα περιπετειώδες ταξίδι 1,031 χιλιομέτρων πάνω από τις Άλπεις μέχρι το Μονακό, κατά τη διάρκεια του οποίου, οι αθλητές θα δίνουν μια συνεχόμενη μάχη με τις άσχημες καιρικές συνθήκες, την εξάντληση και τον πόνο.

Αυτός ο αγώνας δεν μπορεί να συγκριθεί με κανέναν άλλον. Στρατηγική, εξοπλισμός και σώμα, έχουν όλα συντονιστεί τέλεια κατά τη διάρκεια της προετοιμασίας μηνών, ώστε να διασφαλιστεί η καλύτερη δυνατή απόδοση. Κανείς όμως δεν μπορεί να μαντέψει τι θα συμβεί μόλις ξεκινήσει ο αγώνας, καθώς οι αθλητές θα κληθούν να αντιμετωπίσουν όχι μόνο τα δικά τους όρια αντοχής αλλά και τις απρόβλεπτες καταστάσεις της μητέρας φύσης. Ο επικεφαλής του αγώνα ChristophWeber σχολιάζει: «Ο σχεδιασμός της διαδρομής ήταν για εμένα έμπνευση- σκεφτήκαμε συναρπαστικά τοπία, άγρια ​​φύση, καλά cross-country σημεία και διάσημες τοποθεσίες για paragliding. Θέλαμε να στήσουμε μια επική διαδρομή.»

ΣΧΕΤΙΚΑ ΜΕ ΤΟ REDBULLX-ALPS

Το RedBullX-Alps2013 είναι ο σκληρότερος αγώνας περιπέτειας στον κόσμο και φέτος θα διεξαχθεί για έκτη χρονιά. Θα ξεκινήσει στις 7 Ιουλίου με 32 αθλητές από 21 χώρες να μάχονται πάνω από 1,000 χιλιόμετρα κατά μήκος των Άλπεων από το Σάλτσμπουργκ μέχρι του Μονακό μέσω 10 υποχρεωτικών στάσεων, με σκοπό να κάνουν τον καλύτερο δυνατό χρόνο. Σύμφωνα με τους κανονισμούς του αγώνα, οι συμμετέχοντες πρέπει να διανύσουν κάθε χιλιόμετρο είτε με τα πόδια είτε πετώντας με paraglider.

Είναι ένα τρομερό εγχείρημα, το οποίο θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε ένα από τα πιο εντυπωσιακά, σχεδόν τρομακτικά μέρη. Κάθε ομάδα αποτελείται από έναν αθλητή και έως δυο υποστηρικτές. Δεν επιτρέπεται καμία τεχνική ή εξωτερική υποστήριξη. Οι αθλητές θα πρέπει να διαγωνιστούν μεταξύ των ωρών 05:00 με 22:30. Μια ευχάριστη αλλαγή στους κανονισμούς για το 2013 υπόσχεται να κάνει τον αγώνα ακόμη πιο συναρπαστικό, καθώς οι αθλητές θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να πραγματοποιήσουν ένα «NightPass» το οποίο θα τους επιτρέψει να συνεχίσουν την πεζοπορία καθ’ όλη την διάρκεια της νύχτας.

Ο αγώνας απαιτεί εμπειρία και πολύ υψηλά επίπεδα αντοχής- δεν είναι καθόλου ασυνήθιστο για τους αθλητές να κάνουν μέχρι και 100 χιλιόμετρα περπατώντας, σε μια μέρα. Ο ChristianMaurer(ΕΛΒ) ήταν ο νικητής του τελευταίου RedBullX-Alpsπου πραγματοποιήθηκε το 2011, ο οποίος κατάφερε να διασχίσει τη διαδρομή σε 11 μέρες, 4 ώρες και 22 λεπτά. Ο φετινός αγώνας σηματοδοτεί τη δεκάτη επέτειο από το πρώτο RedBullX-Alps το 2003.
